You have been making remarkable progress in your weight loss campaign when all of a sudden things come to an unexpected halt. The fat that was once melting off your body is now refusing to budge, and it seems like your efforts are not bearing any fruit. Why? What do you do when you reach a resistant weight loss plateau?
A weight loss plateau is a period when your body weight remains unchanged. If you weigh yourself daily and have noted that your weight is fluctuating in an unexpected way, there could be many contributing factors. This should not be interpreted as a plateau. A plateau is when your body weight is stagnant – unchanging for a period of 3 weeks or more. Resist the temptation to give up.
Here are some steps that should help you break through the plateau line:
Check your diet, especially your calorie intake
While your diet plays a major role when it comes to weight loss, it is important to note that your body registers a decreased metabolism as it loses weight. This makes it harder to lose more. The lower the body mass, the less energy your body requires to support its smaller size. As you shed more pounds, reconsider your calorie intake based on your physical activity and be sure that you are consuming fewer calories than what you are burning.
Don’t cut back on the intensity of your workouts
Many people reduce the intensity of their workouts when they reach a weight loss plateau. However, this will only confuse the body and curtail your results. Bear in mind that muscle building is essential for weight and body fat loss. Maintaining the momentum of your workout regimen will help you break through the plateau.
Switch up your gym routine
If you are experiencing a plateau, your body could be too accustomed to your workout routine. As it gets used to the weight and the movements, it may not respond in the ways it once did. While performing the same routine will keep you healthy, you may not see new results if you are too repetitive. Try to switch up your routine (even if you are simply alternating between various exercises) in order to trick your body into keeping up and working hard.
Think beyond the gym
Pack your day with different activities beyond the gym. You should not only concentrate on what fitness facilities have to offer, but also engage in simple movements throughout a regular day at work or home. Consider walking or biking to work if it is a reasonable distance away, and taking the stairs instead of using an elevator or an escalator. Clean your home rigorously and take raking your backyard as an opportunity to break a sweat and keep your body engaged.
As you push through your weight loss journey, remind yourself that this is a process and not a one-time event. Not only do you need to shed those initial pounds, but you also need to maintain the results. It may be frustrating to hit a plateau, but there are ways around it!
