6 Easy Ways To Boost Your Metabolism

Are you feeling sluggish, full, and unhealthy? Are you overindulging, having digestive issues and retaining weight? You probably have a slow metabolism. Fortunately, there are many easy ways to crank it back up.

We'll start with the easiest fix…

1) Drink water. Lots of it. In order to process calories, your body needs to be hydrated. Dehydration can slow your metabolism. Try to consume at least 8 cups of water a day, starting in the morning when you first wake up and with every snack and meal. Adding a squeeze of lemon is even better.

2) Build some muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat and uses a lot more energy. Your body is burning calories constantly, even when you are sedentary. However, the resting metabolic rate for people with more muscle is higher than those with excess fat, thus granting them the ability to burn more calories. When your muscles are put to work, that metabolic rate skyrockets.

3) Eat small and often. You may be surprised to hear that the more frequently you eat, the faster your metabolism will be. Sounds ironic, right? Eating throughout the day helps curb hunger and allows you to feel a comfortable full after a reasonably sized meal. In between your three main meals, consume small snacks to ensure that you are feeding yourself every 2-3 hours.

This doesn't mean that having huge, unhealthy meals every 2-3 hours will boost the rate at which you burn calories. Eating big meals with a lot of time in between slows down your metabolism, while eating small and frequently cranks it up. Try to keep all eating sessions – snacks and meals – around 300 calories each.

4) Protein. It takes a lot more energy to digest protein than it does to take down carbs and fat. Consuming lean, protein-rich meats like beef, turkey, white meat chicken and fish will boost your metabolism at mealtime. For snacks and sides, try hard boiled eggs, nuts, beans and low-fat dairy products like cottage cheese.

5) Boost up with Green Tea. If you aren’t wild and crazy for water, try replacing a couple of your 8-cup servings with green tea. The caffeine and catechins (a natural phenol and antioxidant) are known for improving the body’s energy production and digestion.

6) Start early. The sooner you feed your body, the better. Not everyone is a morning person, and most don’t hop out of bed and grab food. However, don’t put off breakfast for too long, as it is the most important meal of the day and will jumpstart your metabolism. Start your morning with a nutrient-rich meal to wake up your body. Try eating a high-protein omelet with veggies or oatmeal with nuts and berries.

A boosted metabolism is one of the key ingredients in any health and weight-watching venture. Try some or all of these tips and you are sure to be headed in the right direction!
