Why Diet Is As Important As Exercise

In order to maintain a healthy weight, a combination of exercise and healthy eating is vital. However, many people tend to ignore one and focus their attention on the other, which is why they never see the changes they want on the scale. Exercising, although it has its numerous advantages such as supporting weight loss and rejuvenating the body, has to be complemented with a good diet.

Being smart about what you eat plays a major role in your weight-watching journey as the calories add up pretty fast. Studies show that weight loss is 25% exercise and 75% diet, which means it is really important to pay close attention to what you eat.

Getting the diet right

Forget blanket statements like “eat less, move more” as this doesn’t address the issue practically. This has led many people down the wrong path, as they jump from one crash diet to the next. They lose weight fast, then pile it back on just as quickly because they tend to forget – or stop caring – about their goals and start binge eating due to the hunger that follows. Low-carb diets provide good results but are harder to sustain.

To avoid such scenarios, eating savvy is key; for starters, ignore junk foods that are high in sugar and salt while minimizing your alcohol intake. Include plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grain carbs in your diet. Lean white meat proteins such as fish and chicken breast will ensure that you stay satiated and full for longer and will keep your binge eating tendencies at bay. Also include nuts, legumes and unsweetened dairy products like milk, yogurt and low fat cheese.

Conclusion

There is a saying that “abs are created in the kitchen.” If you dedicate as much energy in the kitchen as you do in the gym, you will start to see a vast change in your results. You will attain your weight goals quickly and in a healthy way. Find a diet that works for you and stick to it, as consistency and dedication promotes healthy living.
